Description

Garry Potts has been writing, producing and directing films independently since the mid 1980’s. His corporate clients have included such Fortune 500 companies as American Express, Delta Airlines, EDS, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, JCPenney, Nokia, Panasonic, PepsiCo and Texas Instruments. He has produced and directed dozens of short documentary films for public television as well as advocacy films for non-profit organizations. He has produced national televisions commercials for the American Heart Association and for Hampton Inn Hotels.

Potts has shot in more than a dozen countries around the world and won over sixty international awards for creativity in commercials, industrials and documentaries.

Potts first entered the film business by convincing Jim Lehrer to take him on as a student intern for his award-winning public affairs program, Newsroom (a precursor to PBS News Hour) at KERA Channel 13 in Dallas. He worked his way into staff positions as editor, cinematographer and eventually producer.

Potts later moved into the competitive world of freelance corporate and commercial film production, first as a crew technician, and later as an independent producer/director. During some of those years, Potts also taught video production at Southern Methodist University and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Garry Potts is a former president and board member of the Dallas Producers Association. He is a co-founder, former board member and legislative director of the Texas Motion Picture Alliance, the main lobbying mechanism for creating film production incentives in the state legislature. He has also served on the regional boards of Women in Film and the Association of Independent Commercial Producers. Potts received his B. A. degree in Communication at Stanford University, during which time he also studied art history in Florence, Italy.
