Established in 1963, the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility is a NASA base consisting of scientists who devote their time to scientific weather ballooning. It was named after the Space Shuttle Columbia, when the majority of the debris from the shuttle fell in Palestine, Texas. The Columbia base is one of eight total balloon launch sites in the world, with the Columbia base in Palestine launching the most balloons compared to any other base.
