In 1888, the Santa Fe Railroad was laying tracks between Ballinger and San Angelo when it ran out of money at a small settlement about halfway. A local businessman, Jonathan Miles, donated $5000 to finish the tracks to San Angelo. In his honor the settlement was named Miles Station. "Station" was later dropped when Miles was incorporated in 1905. Gone are the days of passenger trains, but freight trains still travel through Miles two to three times a day. The tracks run the length of Miles' city limits and there are four crossings. One is at the intersection of Robinson Street (going downtown) and US Highway 67. Another is one-tenth mile east at the intersection of Miller Street and US Highway 67. Going west one-quarter mile the tracks intersect at Thiele Street and US Highway 67. A fourth crossing is further west about three-fourths mile at the intersection of County Road 365 and US Highway 67. This crossing is right on the edge of the city limits.
