Chapman Building

United States / Bowie, Texas
Location ID: #10191159

The Chapman Building is a newly renovated and rehabilitated two-story 1915 building located in the heart of the historic downtown district of Bowie, Texas. The upstairs has vintage office spaces including skeleton key hardware/hinges and frosted glass carefully restored doors and common living/waiting room with original tin ceilings, and wood floors. The downstairs is the event center complete with exposed brick, depot mural, and mezzanine.

In the early 1900s, the Chapman Building housed office spaces upstairs. Those included Dr. T. H. Clarke, T.B. Coffield – Attorney at Law, J.W. Chancellor – Lawyer (and longest serving Mayor for City of Bowie), E.L. Covey – Republic National Life Insurance Co.) and downstairs Chapman’s Department Store, a dry goods store. All were located just around the corner from the depot and railroad – which created Bowie, Texas. Over the years, the business sold, and in 1948, it became Dodson’s Dry Goods. Eventually the upstairs was abandoned as the building housed the Bowie Mission, the local food pantry and charity. Due to monetary constraints and inability to make repairs by the Mission, the structure was condemned by the City of Bowie. In 2018, Brad Sherman purchased the building to renovate and restore it – saving as a piece of Bowie’s history. In 2021 it was awarded the Texas Downtown Association's People's Choice honor for Best Renovation/Rehabilitation/Restoration.
