Description:Built in the 1880s, this historic building originally served as an Orchestra House, predating both the Seekatz Opera House (c.1900) and the Brauntex Theatre (1942). Over time, it has been renovated and subdivided for a variety of uses, including retail, office, and residential spaces, while still retaining significant original architectural elements. Historic Features: Portions of the original orchestra stage and pit remain, including a non-functioning trap door, orchestra pit wall, and musician access points. The alcove entryway likely housed the original box office booth and still connects to a basement space believed to have served as a VIP lounge. Original men’s and women’s restrooms remain on the main level. The upper level preserves a large open theatre space, complete with the original stage frame, detailed molding, crest, and vintage sconces. Acoustic tiles from the original ceiling are still present. The backdrop tower above the stage remains intact, with visible catwalk structures (though no longer in use). Later Modifications: In the early 20th century, the building was subdivided into smaller parcels. By the 1930s, much of the ground floor was occupied by Volbracht’s Pharmacy, which operated until the mid-20th century. The second floor now includes three small studio apartments at the front, with the remainder of the level preserving the original theatre footprint. Current Use: Today, the building serves as a mixed-use property with retail, service, and residential tenants, but its historic character and dramatic architectural details remain, offering unique opportunities for film and photography projects.
